Gertrude Reimer, age 91, of Huron, passed away Friday, September 24, 2021, at her daughter's home, surrounded by loving family.
The funeral service for Mrs. Reimer was held at the Riverview United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 29, at 10:30 AM. Interment was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Her funeral service was live-streamed though the Riverview United Methodist Church YouTube channel.
Gertrude was born August 16, 1930 to Owen and Lydia (Yegge) King at Carthage, South Dakota. She grew up on a farm west of Virgil. After high school, she attended the teacher's college in Wessington Springs, before attending Dakota State College where she obtained her teaching certificate after attending school for 6 weeks. She was granted her teaching certificate on September 24, 1948. (Gertrude passed away on September 24, 2021 which happened to be her mother's birthday, September 24, 1901.) She went on to later obtain her bachelor's degree from Huron College.
Gertrude married Daniel Reimer on August 10, 1952, in Virgil. They enjoyed dancing and roller skating. They spent their married life in Huron where she went on to teach for over 43.5 years, 37 of those years in the Hitchcock School system.
Gertrude enjoyed taking trips with friends to their favorite casinos where she enjoyed playing the one-armed bandits. Another pastime was quilting, she made quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as many others. One of her most prized possessions was a quilt they made for her 90th birthday with squares personalized by each of them. She also enjoyed doing puzzles in the newspaper, her favorite being Cryptoquip She spent years compiling family genealogy.
Gertrude was active in Virgil's Schmidt-Barnes American Legion Post Auxiliary. As a child she enjoyed helping her mother who was a Gold Star Mother. She was very active in organizing and helping with the Nutcracker Craft Show to raise money for the auxiliary, which supported their local unit. Gertrude served as treasurer, taking over as President when needed.
Gertrude was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. At 91 years young, Mrs. Reimer never forgot even one of her students. She loved them all.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents Lydia and Owen King; her husband, Daniel; three brothers, Alvin, Eldred and Kenneth King; and two infant sisters, Arletta and Lola.
Mrs. Reimer's survivors include her children, Scott (Jeri) Reimer, Monte (Karla) Reimer and Kylene (Jan) Houghtaling; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
