George E. Brandsma, age 98, of Lewisville, Texas, formerly of Huron, passed away June 7, 2021.

His memorial service was held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 3rd in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Huron. Interment was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

George Erwin Brandsma was born April 14, 1923, to Abe and Rena (Heimstra) Brandsma in Rock Valley, Iowa. George was the oldest child of four sons. He grew up on the family farm until he graduated high school. At that time, he joined the United States Navy, serving from 1940 to 1944. He was training to be a pilot when the war ended.

On November 1, 1945, George married Mary Anna Johnson in Colman, South Dakota. They lived at Canton until 1956, when they moved to Huron, where they lived until his wife passed away in 1981.

George worked for the Bureau of Reclamation until his retirement in 1982. A that time, he moved to Texas for warmer weather. He was passionate about his relationship with God and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in several states.

George enjoyed golfing and flying. He was a member of the American Legion, the Elks and Toastmasters.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1981; his son, Dennis in 2011; grandson, John Brandsma in 2015; his brothers, Robert, Loren and Allen Brandsma; and his sisters-in-law, Roberta and Margaret Brandsma.

George is survived by his grandchildren, Justin Brandsma, Jennifer (Bryan) Stucke, and Julie Coyle; great-grandchildren, Kayle Stucke, Jacob Stucke, Alexis Brandsma and Caleb Coyle; and his daughter-in-law, Susan Brandsma.
