Gary Hedlund, age 82, of Huron, passed away August 6, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family.

His funeral service will be 11:00 AM Friday, August 9, at the Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron with burial at 2:30 PM Saturday, August 10, at the Custer Cemetery, Custer, SD.

His visitation, with the family present, will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Gary was born in Winner, SD, to Floyd and Florence (Talcott) Hedlund on February 4, 1942. He graduated from Winner High School in 1959 and Black Hills State University in 1963. On August 20, 1961, he married Lila Alger at Lead, SD. On June 18, 2005, he married Carol Lassen at Miller, SD.

He taught school for twenty-five years in Lincoln City, OR, Nampa, ID, Pierre and Clear Lake, SD. He also worked for the Boeing Co. in Renton, WA, and twenty-two years at Trussbilt in Huron.

He was a member of the Riverview United Methodist Church where he served on many boards and committees. He was also a former member of the Lions, Jaycees, and several teacher's associations.

Gary enjoyed playing golf, bowling, watching high school sports, the Twins, and the Vikings. After retirement, he enjoyed helping his children with their special projects.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; two sons, Stephen of Gillette, WY, Jeffrey (Rebecca) of Veblen, SD; his daughter Becky Hedlund of Brookings; step-children Tonjua (Tim) Gerber of Newcastle, WY. Denise (Robert) Houser of Canyon City, OR, Shelia (Eric) Oian of Alamogordo, NM, and Thomas Nagel of Watertown; his sister Valerie (Thomas) of Winner, SD; sisters-in-law Shirley VanMeter of Rapid City, Doreen Bolander of Winner, Donna Schmidt of Miles City, MT; brother-in-law Merle (Betty) Schmidt of Sioux Falls; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Lila; his brother, James Hedlund; seven brothers-in-law, and four sisters-in-law.
