Fern Wessel, age 100, of Armour and formerly of Huron, died Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at her home in Armour.There will be no public services.According to her wishes, a private family service will be held.
Fern Wessel was born July 19, 1916, in Beadle County near Bonilla, to Harvie J. and Carrie (French) Williams. She attended school at Bonilla and lived in South Dakota most of her life.
Fern married Elvin Fleming in 1934.From this union two sons were born, Stewart and Harvie Fleming.She married Alfred Wessel on March 3, 1943, and resided on a farm ten miles south of Huron for many years.
Fern worked for Sears and for the Beadle County Extension Center with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Program.She retired in July 1981.She moved to Sioux Falls and then to Armour, where she had been living at the time of her death.
Survivors include two sons, Stewart E. (friend Gloria) Fleming of Armour and Harvie John (Roberta) Fleming of Waterloo, IA; one stepson, Irving (Arlene) Wessel of Huron; one step-daughter-in-law, Delores Wessel of Sioux Falls; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents and grandparents; four brothers and their wives, Richard and Hattie, Delbert and Susie, Merlyn and Ruth, and Keith; one sister, Verle; a daughter-in-law, Blanche Fleming; three stepsons, Robert, Lowell and Dale; a step daughter-in-law, Doraine Wessel; and several grandchildren and nephews.
