Ervin "Pikie" Bednar, age 79, of Huron, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2017, at the SunQuest Health Care Center. His funeral service was held at 3:00 PM Saturday, May 6th, at Kuhler Funeral Home. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Ervin Bednar was born October 31, 1937, in Ogilvie, Minnesota to George C. and Magdalene (Yantzi) Bednar. When he was eight years old, he moved with his family to Strandburg, South Dakota where he received his education.
Ervin lived in Midland and Philip before moving to Faith, where he ranched and broke horses. After leaving the ranch, he worked for Main Electric, a government company installing Minuteman missiles in western South Dakota while he lived in Newell.
Always interested in farming and ranching, Ervin decided he wanted to start a dairy farm. He moved to Wolsey where he worked on a dairy farm, which eventually enabled him to buy a dairy farm at Willow River, Minnesota with his parents. Later in life he lived in Aberdeen, Spearfish and in Huron.
His real love all his life was fishing and hunting. When he was fishing with his siblings at the age of four years, he caught a Northern Pike that was so large that his father had to pull both the boy and the fish back in the boat. The fish thus earned him the nickname "Pike" or "Pikie" which followed him throughout his life.
He is survived by his sister, Arlys Bader of Huron; a sister-in-law, Ann (Maynard) Teppo of Fruitdale; a brother-in-law, Darrell Ward of Belle Fourche; and many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Muriel Goetsch, Donna Ward, and Dwaine Bednar; and brothers-in-law, Darrell Bader and Roland Goetsch.
