Obituary

Ervan Gerald "Bing" Lehmen, age 95, of Huron, died Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. His funeral service was held at 11 AM, Wednesday, June 21st at the First Baptist Church. Burial was held in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors by the Huron Veterans Council.
Ervan Gerald "Bing" Lehmen was born March 15th, 1922, to Harold and Nancy (Thompson) Lehmen at Huron, SD, where he attended school through the seventh grade. He joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) at Camp Lightning Creek in the Black Hills and attended eighth grade while in the CCC. At the age of 19, he joined the Marine Corps and served from 1941 - 1944, mostly overseas during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Upon returning from the war he worked various jobs before starting work for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, where he was employed from 1945 to 1972, when he retired due to disability. On October 21st, 1951, Ervan married Violet Jean Whittemore at the First Baptist Church at Huron, SD. They had seven children - one son, followed by six daughters.
Ervan enjoyed working around the house, building and working with cement projects. He was a gifted singer and enjoyed singing at home whenever the mood struck him. He was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. He was a member of the Huron Senior Center, former member of the VFW, and the Disabled American Veterans, and was a big supporter of Easter Seals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Jean; his parents; his son, Leon, his grandson, Larry; six siblings, Betty, Wilmer, Robert, Thelma, Glen, and Edwin; and his son-in-law, Jeffrey Dilley.
Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters, Janelle Lehmen of Huron, Marilyn (David) Estby of Two Harbors, Minnesota, Connie (Daniel) Bublitz, Laurie Dilley, and Sheila (Wyatt) Brotherton, all of Huron, and Patty (Bruce) Mork of Lyons, South Dakota; a brother-in-law, Clifford (Bonnie) Whittemore of Batesville, Arkansas; a daughter-in-law, Patty (Rick) Schlimgen of Rapid City, South Dakota; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grand-children; several step-grand-children; a nephew, Brian Whittemore of Wichita, Kansas; and a niece, Julie Fletcher of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
