Obituary

Dorothy Plate, age 88, of Huron, passed away October 3, 2020, at the Deadwood Hospital.

Her funeral service was held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 7, with visitation one hour prior to the service, at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Dorothy's service was live-streamed through the Kuhler Funeral Home's Facebook page .

In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to The Methodist Women at the First United Methodist Church.

Dorothy Jean Hins was born December 12, 1931, to Solomon and Bertha (Tiede) Hins at Wessington Springs, SD.  She graduated from Alpena High School and attended Northern State majoring in music for one year, but went home to help on the family farm after her mother became ill. She taught school at Bell Country School in Hand County for one year.  She also worked as a teller at Farmers and Merchants Bank in Huron for seven years.

On January 18, 1953, Dorothy married Wallace Robert Plate at the First United Methodist Church in Huron.  Dorothy and Wally purchased Marvin Cleaners, and Model Laundry where she helped to operate the businesses.  In 1977 they built and started operating Wally's Coin-op Laundry Mat and Car Wash.  Later on Dorothy worked at Coach House Gifts - Joan's Hallmark and then Home Hearted Gifts and also Schweizer Clothing in the Huron Mall.

Dorothy was an accomplished self-taught pianist. She accompanied countless young musicians to compete in annual regional and state music competitions.

Dorothy was an active member of the Huron First United Methodist Church.  She sang in the choir for more than 50 years as well as volunteered with countless ladies groups serving funeral meals and serving families in need.  She was a proud member of the Mizpah Chapter #9 Order of the Eastern Star where she served as the organist for many years as well as a term as State Grand Organist.

Dorothy kept very busy volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels, Community Concert, participated in many Bridge Clubs and in her younger years she was involved in her bowling league.  In 2017 Dorothy moved to Garden Hills Assisted living in Spearfish SD to be closer to her daughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wallace on August 3, 2002; and her brother and sister-in-law, Homert and Viola Hins.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Darin Derosier of Deadwood, SD and Lana and Scott Presuhn of Killeen, Texas; three grandchildren, Janelle (Matt) Spencer, and Heather (Bert) Sturner, and Boe Derosier; three great-grandchildren, Hunter, Kahlan, and Leo Spencer.  Sister-in-laws, Leona Ross of Mitchell, Geneva Plate of Huron, one step-sister, Eloa (Orville) Kroeker of Placerville, California; two nephews, Ron (Jill) Hins and Dennis (Sandy) Hins, as well as many great niece and nephews.
