Obituary

Dorothy Olsen, age 92, died Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at the SunQuest Healthcare Center. Her funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 7th at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Huron. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Huron Regional Medical Center Hospice, Congregational United Church of Christ, or a charity of donor's choice.
Dorothy Jane Schrader was born December 14, 1923, in Lake Preston, South Dakota. She grew up in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1942. She went to business school and was employed at Northwest Security National Bank in Huron.
Dorothy played piano for many years. She had a love for music and became a drummer in high school and continued to play after high school, becoming a member of the Huron City Band. That is where she met her future husband, Nels Olsen. They were married May 25, 1947.
Dorothy and Nels began their life together in Hitchcock where Nels operated Olsen Implement. Dorothy also worked part time in the business. Married for nearly 70 years, they raised four children: Dennis, Karen, Nancy and Sue. In 1965, they moved their family to Huron where they purchased the International Harvester Dealership.
Dorothy was an active, lifelong member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. She spent many years teaching piano, accompanying soloists and playing piano and organ in church. She enjoyed many activities such as traveling, dancing, and music. She was an especially avid bridge player.
Dorothy was a 50 year member of Chapter AN, PEO, a lifetime member of the Senior Center and was involved in the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star and church circle.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of 69 years, Nels of Huron; one son, Dennis (Linda) Olsen of Sioux Falls; three daughters, Karen (Steve) Marcus of Huron, Nancy (Kevin) Kreulen of Boulder Canyon in the Black Hills, and Sue Pochardt of Gilbert, Arizona; eleven grandchildren, Amy Olsen, Erik Olsen, MaryJane (Dan) Unzelman, David Olsen, Jason (Urla) Marcus, Adam (Chasity) Marcus, Richard (Linda) Marcus, Lee (Janelle) Anderson, Josh Anderson, Jack (Emily) Pochardt and Traci Pochardt; and eight great grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, William and Florence Ferguson, and her brother, Donald Schrader.
