Don Smith, age 60, of Huron, died Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at his home after a short fight with brain cancer. His memorial service was at 2 PM, Saturday, December 5th at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Holland, officiating.
Donald "Don" J. Smith was born April 15, 1955, to Nick and Frances Smith. He graduated from Baltic High School.
Don married Sharleen Rasmussen in 1975 in De Smet. They later moved to Huron,
Don worked at Cenex in De Smet and later in Huron. He then worked for Huron Manufacturing. In 1995, Don bought a Peterbuilt and was a self-employed driver, and continued brokering until his death. In 2004, he retired from driving truck and started Don Smith Construction.
He enjoyed working, hunting, golfing, and wintering in Arizona for ten years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, D.J. Smith; one brother, Larry Jim Smith; one brother-in-law, Alan Rasmussen; his mother-in-law, Patricia Rasmussen; and one grandson, Brandon.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife, Sharleen of Huron; three sons, Tony (JoAnn) Smith and Todd (Kim) Smith, all of Huron, and Chris (Katie) Smith of Fort Polk, Louisiana; one daughter, Nicole (Keith) Nettekoven of Menasha, Wisconsin; one daughter-in-law, Jodi Smith of Piedmont; twelve grandchildren, Ashley, Alex, Alyssa, Aaron, Jacob, Taylor, Kayla, Evan, Zack, Brooklyn, Kasey, and Halle Jo; and five great-grandchildren, Haleigh, Beau, Katie, Ashton, and Ashley. Don is also survived by three brothers, Bob Smith and Rich (Judy) Smith, all of De Smet, and Phillip (Joyce) Smith of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters, Nancy (Larry) Melstad of Huron and Connie (Glen) Ruyter of Mankato, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
