Obituary

David "Squibbly" Johnson, age 61, of Huron, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, surrounded by his family.

His funeral was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 5th at the Kuhler Funeral Home. A private burial will be at a later date.  His service was live-streamed through our website.

David Charles Johnson was born September 12, 1960, to Russell and Mildred (Walline) Johnson at Huron. He grew up in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1978. He later graduated from USD in 1983.

He sold cars for many years and was also a bartender in Mesa, Arizona. In 2004, Dave returned to Huron, where he worked at Our Home, Inc. as a youth counselor, until his health started to fail and was forced in to early retirement.

Dave was an avid Pittsburg Steelers fan. He also enjoyed watching dirt track car racing, especially sprint cars. Dave enjoyed great food at his favorite sports bars where he could have hots wings, a cold Sprite and watch racing and football.

Dave enjoyed connecting with friends old and new on Facebook and Twitter.

He loved to drive around Huron in his Willy Jeep during the summer months.

Dave suffered from liver failure for many years. He made weekly and later bi-weekly trips to Sioux Falls for dialysis.  Dave was on the transplant list for 3 ½ years for a new liver. He received the call Sunday morning, November 14, 2021. The next day the transplant was completed. A week later, Dave could be found singing and dancing in the hallways at Avera McKennan, rejoicing with his new liver. Unfortunately, there were complications, and Dave never made it back to Huron to celebrate with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia and her husband Warren.

Survivors include his sister, Juli and her husband, Reed Binger of Missouri Valley, Iowa; three nieces, Kristen (Travis) Maasen, Elysa Binger (fiancé Sam Howe) and Amy (Tim) McMahon; one nephew, Braden Binger; 3 great-nieces, Gigi, Emily and McKenna; and one great-nephew, Layton.

He will be missed by his family and many friends at the Scoreboard, 212 Boiling Point, and many people from the dirt tracks he visited.
