Daryel "Dick" Chase, age 81, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at SunQuest Health Care Center. His funeral service was at 10:00 AM, Monday, June 15th, at Hope Lutheran Church, 1667 Frank Avenue SE, Huron, with Rev. Tom Christenson, officiating. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens following the service
Daryel Dean Chase was born on December 28, 1933, at home in Faulk County to Leo and Marie (Ehrich) Chase. He grew up in the Miranda, South Dakota area, and attended school in Miranda. He married Shirley Freeburg at the Methodist Church in Frankfort, South Dakota, on October 17, 1954. He worked at Sunshine State Dairy in Redfield, South Dakota, until moving to Huron in 1957. Once in Huron, he continued working for the dairy. He was then employed by Armour and Company for 24 years until the plant closed in 1983.
He started farming by working for other farmers in the Huron area before purchasing his own farm in 1970. Dick loved farming and raised corn, hay, grain, cattle, pigs and sheep. He continued to live and work there until becoming a resident of SunQuest Health Care Center in February 2015.
Dick was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, served on the Theresa Township Board, was a volunteer for the Huron Fire Department, and was a board member of the Huron Area Antique Power Association. He was a previous member of Belles and Beaus Square Dance Club and Mr. and Mrs. Dance Club. Dick loved to play various card games and give tractor rides to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents; grandparents; one sister, Rita Hanson; and three brothers-in-law, Delbert Bottum, Robert Freeburg and Gordon Churchill.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley; four children, Peggy (Larry) Bockorny of Huron, William "Bill" (Kathy) Chase of Wolsey, Patricia "Patty" (Brian) McGrane of Plymouth, Minnesota, and Roger (Michelle) Chase of Huron; fourteen grandchildren, Michael (Kristi) Bockorny, Rebecca (Kirk) Eckhardt, Benjamin (Marie) Chase, Joseph (Erica) Chase, Nathan (Andrea) Chase, Spencer Chase, Adam (Becca) McGrane, Karla (Chris) Taylor, Chase McGrane, Briana McGrane, Riley McGrane, Derek (Tia) Chase, Lexy Chase, and Ryan Chase; fourteen great-grandchildren, Matthew Bockorny, Connor Bockorny, Emily Bockorny, Cassidy Eckhardt, Carson Eckhardt, Carter Eckhardt, Brittan McGrane, Malia McGrane, John Taylor, Avery Shumaker, Courtney Shumaker, Davis Chase, Josiah Chase, and Micah Chase; two half-sisters, Marlene Churchill of Grants Pass, Oregon and Karolyn (Gary) DeShazer of Ft. Collins, Colorado; one half-brother, Blair Meyers of Huron; one brother-in-law, Ralph "Craig" (Adele) Hanson of Houston, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Ann (Don) Grieben of Tumwater, Washington, June Bottum of Tulare, and Marlis Freeburg of Redfield; many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
