Darlene Esther (Fischer) Sandmeier, age 88, of Huron, died Wednesday, January 27, 2016, in hospice care at her son, Warren's home. Her funeral service was held at 2 PM, Monday, February 1st, at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery.
Darlene was born in Long Lake, South Dakota on August 13, 1927, to Fred and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Fischer. She joined two older brothers, Harold and Henry and two older sisters, Eleanora and Huldina. Two more sisters, Virginia and Anne Marie followed in a couple of years. The three oldest siblings, Frieda, Freddy, and Viola, were lost to childhood disease and hardship.
Darlene attended rural school where instruction was given in German for the first few years. She attended rural school through the eighth grade then helped out on the family farm and other family's farms until she married Ruben Sandmeier, January 14, 1945. Darlene and Ruben moved to the Sandmeier family farm and remained there until 1963 when they moved to the town of Long Lake. They stayed there until 1985 when they moved to Huron, South Dakota, to be near the latest grandson.
Darlene and Ruben had three children, Gerald Ruben "Jerry", Warren Jacob, and Edith Ann "Edie."
Darlene's talents were varied. In addition to being a sister, wife and mother, she was a farmer, cow milker, vegetable gardener, grocery store clerk, meat market worker, nursing home worker and house cleaner. She was also active in the church during her time at Long Lake as well as after they moved to Huron. She was a participating member of the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church from 1985 until her death. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends and made every opportunity to do that.
Darlene is survived by her two sons and daughter; three grandsons, Michael, Jeremy and Lance; one great-grandson, Alex; numerous nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Olivia (Sandmeier) Schock and Elsie (Sandmeier) Geffre, both of Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; sisters; and a great-grandson, Devon Sandmeier.
