Dale Allen May, Sr., age 99, of Huron, passed away Thursday, April 1, 2021, at the Huron Regional Medical Center, with his family by his side.
A service to celebrate his life was held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 6th, at the Riverview United Methodist Church. His service was live-streamed through the Riverview United Methodist Church and Virgil United Methodist Church website. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military honors by the Huron Veterans Council.

Dale Allen May was born July 17, 1921, to Clifford and Nellie (Bemis) May at Huron. He attended Valley Country School #1 through the eighth grade, then one year at Huron High School, and three years at the Agriculture School at Brookings.
Dale was a United States Navy Veteran, having served two years during World War II, where he was stationed in the Philippines. He was privileged to go on the National Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. from October 22-23, 2010.
On March 21, 1948, Dale married Lillian A. Trotter at Huron. They were blessed with four children, Rita, Gayle, Dale, Jr. and Charlene. Dale and Lillian bought the family homestead northeast of Huron, and farmed and operated a dairy for many years. Following the sale of the farm, Dale and Lillian moved to a condo in Huron and wintered in Arizona for many years.
He was the treasurer for Valley Township for many years. Dale was also a 4-H leader and a softball coach. He served on the Huron Planning and Zoning Board, volunteered with the Back Pack Program, and delivered meals on wheels.
Dale was a member of the Riverview United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Huron Eye Opener Lion's Club, the VFW and the Fun Steppers dance group. Dale also loved spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law; his wife, Lillian in 2001; one son, Dale "Buddy" A. May, Jr. in 2014; one step-son, Lyle Timperley; two brothers, Albert (Daisy) May and Stanley May; and two sisters, Marie (Gail) Mallon and Dorothy (Jim) Rogers.
Dale is survived by his three daughters, Rita Swanson of Orlando, Florida, Gayle (Tom) Langbehn of Durant, Iowa and Charlene (Brad) Olson of Rapid City, South Dakota; his daughter-in-law, Evonne May of Aberdeen; one sister-in-law, Eva May Heller of Denver, Colorado; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
