Cynthia K. Barnes, age 59, of Huron, died Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at her home. Her funeral service was held at 2 PM, Saturday, January 9th at the American Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Cynthia Kay (Skovlund) Barnes was born in Brookings, South Dakota on September 6, 1956. She was one of seven children born to Melvin and Nellie (Cone) Skovlund. She passed away peacefully at her home on January 5, 2016 after a courageous battle with ALS.
At the age of five, Cindy and her family moved to the Huron area where she attended school through her graduation in 1974. Cindy met Randy Barnes, the love of her life in the spring of 1980. On May 2, 1981 they were united in marriage at the American Lutheran Church of Huron, where she was also a lifelong member.
Cindy had a talent for cake decorating and was able to share her gift with others through her work. Her cake decorating career began at her parents' M&N Bakery, and continued at Randall's Foods and Coborn's. Cindy loved creating cakes for her family and friends and always went out of her way to make each occasion special.
To know Cindy was to know how fiercely she loved her family. Randy and their children, Casey and Sarah, were her reasons for living. Once daughter-in-law, Kerry and son-in-law, Cody joined the family, the grandchildren soon followed and Cindy's world was complete. Everything that Cindy did and the things she held dear were centered around those she loved the most.
She is survived by her husband, Randy of Huron; her stepson, Casey (Kerry) Barnes of Portland, Oregon; her daughter, Sarah (Cody) Freeman of Amherst, Ohio; her grandchildren, Clover Barnes, Connor Barnes, Winter Freeman, and Wolf "Rocky" Freeman; sister, Rhonda (Tom) Palmer of Tullahoma, Tennessee; sister, Ranae (Dennis) Eichstadt of Sioux Falls; brother, Mike (Terri) Skovlund of Sioux Falls; brother, Marty (Marie) Skovlund of Huron; brother, Kyle (Shannon) Skovlund of Hatton, North Dakota; sister, Nikki Skovlund of Huron; and many nieces and nephews.
