Curtis LeRoy Schimke, age 92, of Huron and formerly of Wessington Springs, died Saturday, February 11, 2017, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. A private family burial will be held at the Riverside Cemetery.
Curtis LeRoy Schimke was born October 13, 1924, to Reinhold and Emma (Huether) Schimke on his grandfather and father's farm northwest of Wessington Springs. He attended Northwest Harmony School through the eighth grade. He attended high school at Woonsocket.
At age 11, he moved with his parents several times before settling in Woonsocket. When he was 18, he moved back to the family farm.
On October 6, 1946, he married Larraine June Newell at Miller. They made their home on a farm near Wessington Springs. Curtis was a farmer all of his life and enjoyed raising Hereford cattle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Melvin on August 24, 2016; mother-in-law, Bernice Newell; and two sisters, Erna Gutridge and Fern Vogt.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Larraine of Huron; three children, Garry (LaVonne) Schimke, Sandra (Merle) Dahme and Judy (Jim) Cummings, all of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Christi, Carrie and Lorraine; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kailey, Thaddeus and John; and one sister, Betty (Will) Allen of Tennessee.
