Clayton V. Carter, age 93, of Huron, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2020, at Avantara of Huron.
His funeral service was held at 11 am., Thursday, December 3, at the Kuhler Funeral Home of Huron, with military honors by the Huron Veterans Council. Burial followed the service at Ideal Cemetery.
Visitation with family present, will be one hour prior to the service.
Clayton Vance Carter was born June 7, 1927, at Canby, Minnesota, to Lynn "Al" and Doris (Knutson) Carter. He graduated from Huron High School in 1945. He served four years in the United States Navy aboard a destroyer stationed in Pearl Harbor and seven years in the Reserves. He attended Dunwoody Trade School in Minneapolis where he met his future wife, Veona "Vee" Carlson of Isanti, Minnesota. The couple married in 1952.
Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Huron to work at the family business "Al's A1 Auto Repair" located north of Huron which included an inventory of GMC trucks, Rupp snowmobiles, Red Dale and Forester RV's, Lawn Boy mowers, pick-up toppers and RV supplies. Clayton later attended General Motors School and specialized in automatic transmission repair.
He was an auto racing enthusiast, passing down his love for the sport to both his son, Bruce, and grandson, Kyle. In his younger years, Clayton and his family were avid snowmobilers. In his later years, his interest turned to restoring old cars.
He is survived by his son, Bruce (Diane) Carter of Huron; two grandsons, Kyle (Shadra) Carter of Wolsey and Michael Carter of Fargo, North Dakota; one granddaughter, Chelsea Rogers (Caden Stout) of Lewisville, Texas; four great-grandsons, Kaydin, Jacksen, Benton and Callen Carter, all of Wolsey; and one great-granddaughter, Evelyn Dianne Stout of Lewisville, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Veona; and daughter, Dianne (Jeff) Rogers.
