Burlyn Vern "Bernie" Hanson, age 95, of Huron, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2024, at the Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls.

His Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, November 12, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. His service was live-streamed.

Visitation was held from 12:30 to 2 PM at the church on Tuesday.

Burlyn Vern "Bernie" Hanson, the son of Siver S. and Evelyn (Naze) Hanson, was born on April 7, 1929 in Montpelier, ND.  Bernie grew up in Montpelier, ND, until his family moved to Huron, SD, when he was 14 years old. Bernie attended school and graduated from Huron High School in 1948.  He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged.

Bernie married Valla Vee "Val" Baum in 1960, and to this union were born three children Kevin, Melanie and Craig.  Bernie made his home in Huron, where he worked for the U.S Postal Service for over 40 years before his retirement.

Bernie was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Bernie loved to fly and received his pilot's license when he was just 16 years old. Building radio-controlled airplanes and flying them became a lifelong hobby for Bernie as well. Bernie liked to tinker around with electronics and was also an amateur photographer.

Grateful for having shared in Bernie's life are his children, Melanie (Gary Kasperson) Letsche of Huron, SD and Craig Hanson of Sioux Falls, SD; his special friend,  Vickie Lewis; his brother, James Hanson of Littleton, CO; his nieces, Jolene Heising and Lori Guarino; his nephew, James Hanson; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Kevin in 2022; his sister, Lonna Lemke; his niece, Linda Hanson; and his nephew, Scott Lemke.
