Beverly Joy Erdahl, age 87, of Huron, passed away Monday, August 28, 2023, at Avantara – Huron.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 9, at the First Presbyterian Church, Huron. Burial will be in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Her service will be live-streamed.
Visitation was held from 1:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, September 8, at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with her family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, and a prayer service at 6:30 PM Friday evening.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Beverly Joy Edleman was born September 1, 1935, to Alva and Thelma (Poppen) Edleman, on a farm between Willow Lake and Bryant, South Dakota. She attended school at Willow Lake until 1951, when she moved to Huron with her mother and stepfather, Maynold Peterson and siblings.
She attended Huron High School for one year and then returned to Willow Lake to graduate with her class. She graduated from Huron College and attended many colleges for graduate work.
On September 5, 1953, Bev married Lester Erdahl. In March 1963, they welcomed a baby, Terian. At that time, if you became pregnant, you had to resign from teaching and then reapply. Several years later, Bev and Les then decided to adopt a son, David. They were married for over 60 years.
Bev taught school in rural Beadle County for two years and at McKinley School, Huron for 42 years. Her honors included Teacher of the Year 1990-1991, Who's Who Among Educators 1992, Huron Educator of the Year 1994, Outstanding Young Educator and was a candidate for the Spirit of Dakota Award. In her retirement, she did private tutoring and volunteered at several schools. She was a member of the Huron Area Retired School Personnel and served as President.
Bev was a 50+ year member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as Trustee, Deacon, Elder, Clerk of Session, wrote the church newsletter and kept attendance for many years. She was also a Sunday School Teacher, LOGOS Teacher and a member of the Womens Circle.
Bev taught water aerobics at the Nordby Center for many years in her retirement. Bev and Les enjoyed traveling to 49 of the 50 states. She moved to the Carriage House after living in her home on 11th Street Southwest for 61 years.
She enjoyed going to watch her grandson, Anthony's art and music events. One of her proudest moments was attending her grandson's Masters of Music Performance in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 2016.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alva Edleman and Thelma Edleman Peterson; her step-father, Maynold Peterson; one grandson, Tanner Bierstedt; one brother, Allen Edleman; her husband, Les; one sister, Natalie Schroeder; and one son-in-law, Roger Bierstedt.
Grateful for sharing in her life are her daughter, Teri Bierstedt, of Brookings; her son, David Erdahl of Huron; one sister, Pam (Lance) Charbonneau of Sheldon, Iowa; two grandsons, Anthony Bierstedt of Saint Paul, Minnesota and Trever Erdahl of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
