Betty A. Johnke, age 90, of Huron, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2020, at Avantara-Huron.

Her funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 5th at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Her service was live streamed through the Kuhler Funeral Home Facebook page.

Betty Arlene Vanderbilt was born February 11, 1930, the 5th child of Floyd and Hallie (Rankin) Vanderbilt of Wessington, South Dakota.  The Vanderbilt family lived on different farmsteads north of Wessington. Betty rode her horse, Peanuts, to country school; her teacher was Gertrude Pouch.

On September 4, 1949, Betty married James T. Johnke at Huron.  In 1951, their son, Francis James was born. In 1953, they completed with family when daughter, Colleen Marie, was born. Betty was a homemaker and stay at home mom.  She also worked as a housekeeper for others.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James on October 27, 1983; and three brothers, Bill, Melvin and Lavern Vanderbilt; and one sister, Ruth Williams.

Survivors include her children, Frank Johnke of Huron and Colleen Marie Perez of Sioux Falls; three grandsons, Jamie, Caleb and Zack; and eleven great-grandchildren.
