Bernice Barnes, age 79, of Huron, died Monday, February 8, 2016, at the Sanford USD Medical Center at Sioux Falls. Her funeral service was held at 2 PM, Friday, February 12th at the First United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery.
Bernice Alice Markley was born October 29, 1936, to George and Alice (Bancroft) Markley at Highmore, South Dakota. She grew up in the Highmore area and graduated from Highmore High School in 1954.
On August 4, 1954, Bernice married Raymond Barnes at the Methodist Church in Pierre.
Bernice enjoyed crocheting, gardening, bowling, and golfing. She adored her family and loved spending time with them.
She volunteered at the election polls for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Stella Markley, Flora Davis and Beverly Jerke; six brothers, Charles, Vic, Lyle, Stanley, Floyd and Howard Markley; and two brothers-in-law, Marvin and Chester Barnes.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband of 61 years, Raymond Barnes of Huron; five children, Robert Barnes of Huron, David (Eva) Barnes of Huron, Roger (Marcia) Barnes of Huron, Cheryl St. Saureur of Vancouver, Washington, and Cindy (Joe) Sousa of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren, Brent (Emily Suprenant) Barnes, Derek Barnes, Tiffany (Josh) Nelson, Kara Sousa, Julie (Bob Miller) Colgan-Williams, Michael (Kendra) Colgan, and Richard (Valerie Stouwie) Colgan; nine great-grandchildren, Autumn Rae Barnes, Carter Nelson, Robbie Williams, Patrick Williams-Wood, John Williams-Wood, Bella Miller, Tyson Colgan, Derek Colgan, and Kaylee Colgan; one sister, Delores "Diz" Coffman of Amarillo, Texas; four sisters-in-law, Donna (Curtis) Misslitz of Aberdeen, Zelma Dean of Sioux Falls, Zada Brock of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Eldora Barnes of Harrold; and two brothers-in-law, Rollin (Virginia) Barnes of Pierre and Kenneth (Judy) Barnes of Michigan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
