Annie M. Wood was born in Richmond, Va. in 1924. She was a 1943 graduate of Cathedral High School where she tutored French to her classmates, sang in the choir and played girls basketball. After graduation, she was employed as a long distance telephone operator.
Annie met her future husband, Richard Peterson, at a USO dance and they were married at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Christmas Eve, 1943. After Richard's discharge from the US Navy in late 1945, they moved to Huron where they raised three children. When the children were older, Annie worked at the Huron J.C. Penney store for several years where she made lasting friendships even into her elder years.
After Richard's death, she enjoyed a close friendship with Norma Bonnes who was also a widow and whose husband had been a co-worker of Richard's at the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Mom will be remembered for her compassion for animals (most of her cats began as strays) and her love of gardening (peonies were her specialty). She was a long-time member of St. Martin's Parish and then Holy Trinity.
A heartfelt thank you to Gary and Virginia Peterson, Janice Frey, Deloris Brown and Bill Jones for their kindness and care extended to our mother; especially during the last months of her life. Thank you as well to Dr. Mckinney and the Huron Clinic for the years of care given to Mom; the caregiver nurses and staff from Home Health at Huron Regional Medical Center; SunQuest Healthcare Center and Dr. Gregory Wiedel of Tschetter and Hohm Clinic.
She was precededin death by her husband, Richard; son, Richard Michael; parents, Grace L. and Edward W. Wood, Jr. and four siblings.
Annie is survived by her son, Raymond C. (Rose) Peterson; her daughter, Eileen M. (Joseph) Stitz; her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Wood; and nieces and nephews.
Mom's journey is over now and we are confident she and Dad are dancing together again.
