Clara Annette was born on her dad's birthday, October 26, 1913, to Alexander and Lydia (Meillaud) Jans at Creighton, South Dakota. She had two brothers, Elmer and Herman; and a baby sister, Alma. Years later, her mother remarried and she gained four step-brothers, Filmore, Howard, Albert and Earl; one step-sister, Irene; and one half-sister, Esther.
On October 25, 1929, Annette married Richard Kost. They had one daughter, Velda, and farmed near Ree Heights. In 1946, they moved their trucking business to Miller, South Dakota. She was a hospital volunteer, ceramics maker, and a bell choir ringer, member of Senior Citizens, line dancer, and always had a prayer of Christian quote that she was memorizing. She loved God's word and was involved in many bible studies.
