Angeline Hughes, age 93, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Huron, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Village at Sioux Falls. Her funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Monday, October 15th, at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Active Generations Meals on Wheels Program or a charity of donor's choice.
Angeline Siciliani Hughes was born February 25, 1925, in Cook County, Chicago, IL, the first-born to Vito N. Siciliani and Lucy R. (Paoletta) Siciliani. Angeline received her education in the public schools in Chicago and Oak Park, IL. She was employed at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago prior to her marriage to R Frank Hughes on December 2, 1944. The couple made their first home in Chicago where Mr. Hughes was stationed in the US Navy. In July, 1946, they moved to Huron, SD, where they owned and operated Frank's Photo House for more than forty-five years. Angeline was a receptionist and oil colorist in the photo business. Later, she was employed as a clerk/typist for the Huron Hospital and the Bradfield-Leary Center until her retirement in 1995.
As a long-time member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Huron, she served as a church school teacher, church choir member, and a vice-president of UCW. She held membership in Mizpah Chapter # 9, OES, and was Worthy Matron in 1975. She made Sioux Falls her home in October, 1996, and transferred her memberships to Sioux Falls Jasper Chapter # 8, where she received her OES 50-year pin, Ashrama Chapter Daughters of the Nile, and the Shrine Auxiliary.
As a member of First Baptist Church, Sioux Falls, she was instrumental in organizing, knitting, and crocheting more than 100 prayer shawls for its prayer shawl ministry. In 2006 she moved to the Bergeland Center Apartments, and was active in the knitting program at Active Generations. Since May, 2017, she has resided at the Good Samaritan Village. The family gratefully thanks the staff at the Village for the care they gave her.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years R Frank Hughes, a WWII Navy Veteran, in 1993; her parents, three brothers: Joseph Michael Siciliani, George Michael Siciliani, and John Vito Siciliani; a granddaughter Kira Anna Hughes, a great-granddaughter Anna Grace Eller; a nephew Jim Joseph Siciliani and his son Nicholas.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her family including daughter, Charlyse Anne (Wilton) Cade, Sioux Falls, a granddaughter Sandra Anne (Kyle) Eller and great-granddaughters Elisabeth Anne and Maria Anne, Duluth, MN, and grandson Dr. Mark (Jennifer) Cade and great-granddaughter Ellie Rene, Omaha, NE; son Frank Douglas (Kristin) Hughes, Naomi, SD, granddaughter Meghan Elisabeth (Nick) Geiken and great-grandson Calvin Douglas Geiken, Sioux Falls, SD, and grandson Jared Douglas Hughes, Cherokee, IA; son John Robert (Beth) Hughes, Sioux Falls, and grandsons Capt. Elliott Michael (Alice) Hughes, St. Louis, MO, Stuart John (Nevada) Hughes and great-grandsons Jameson John Hughes and Clark Gabriel Hughes, Sioux Falls, SD; and Evan David Hughes of Sioux Falls. Survivors also include Angeline's sister-in-law, Virginia (John) Siciliani and Siciliani family nieces and nephews of California.
