Alma J. Hofer, age 99, of Huron and formerly of Hitchcock, died Saturday, February 11, 2017, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service was held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, February 15th, at the Prairie Bible Church, rural Carpenter, with burial in the church cemetery. Alma J. Hofer was born January 24, 1918, to John J. K. and Sarah (Tschetter) Hofer on a farm near Hitchcock. At the early age of 6, she realized her need of Christ in her life. She accepted him as her personal Savior and was baptized at the Fairfield Church by Rev. P.P. Tschetter.
After graduating from Sunnyside Bible School, she taught Bible school in surrounding churches and at the Hutterthal Mennonite Church. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She loved to sing. Alma was an avid reader of hundreds of books. She spoke in many different churches.
Alma moved to Huron on July 1, 1997.She hosted many missionaries and pastors in her home. She was a woman of prayer and counseled many that came for encouragement and prayer. Alma was a prayer warrior. She had an extensive collection of Bibles.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, John, Joseph, Melvin and Leon Hofer; and four sisters, Anna Wyld, Rosie Hofer, Dorothy Wipf and Kathryn Fast.
Grateful for having shared her life are her three brothers and their wives, Herbert and DeeAnn Hofer of Huron, Eldon and Alie Hofer of Hitchcock and Allen and Ella Mae Hofer of Sioux Falls; two sisters and their husbands, Beverly and Gary Frankenstein and Edna and Solomon Tschetter, all of Huron; four sisters-in-law, Josephine Hofer of Huron, Glenna Hofer of Denver, Colorado, Marilyn Hofer of Huron and Dorothy Walters of Warsaw, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.
