Violet “Vi” Mendel

Violet ‘Vi” Mendel, age 84, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Huron, died Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.  Her funeral service was at 3 PM Saturday, September 15th at the Living Hope Alliance Church with Rev. Richard Birr officiating.  Burial was in the Ideal Cemetery.    Because of her love for animals, memorials may be directed to Beadle County Humane Society. 

Violet  was born January 6, 1928, in Fargo, North Dakota to Karl and Evelyn (Anderson) Smeby.  She was educated in Fargo schools and was working at a diner when she met Roy Mendel, of Freeman. 

She was married to Roy W. Mendel on August 11, 1946, in Moorhead, Minnesota.  They lived in Sioux Falls for a while before moving to a farm west of Freeman in 1948.  In 1951, they bought a farm in Beadle County near Wolsey.  They farmed until 1968, when they moved to Huron.  Vi began working as a waitress at The Plains Coffee Shop in 1968, where she served countless customers for close to 38 years.   

 Vi was an active member of the Progressive Homemakers Extension Club for many years, was a 4-H volunteer and enjoyed raising flowers.  She was a member of the Huron Doll Club and also liked to read, ride her bicycle and do crosswords. 

She is survived by her children, Eileen (Darrel) Leischner of Sioux Falls and Dave Mendel of Watertown, and two grandchildren, Lisa (Tim) Hawkins and Heather Leischner of Sioux Falls. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roy; two brothers, Alan and Clark; and two sisters, Eleanor and Irene.
