Ruth Cernick obituary photoRuth H. Cernick, age 84, of Huron, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at SunQuest Healthcare Center.  Her funeral service was at 11 AM Saturday, November 21st at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Crippen officiating. 

Ruth Helen Ramsell was born September 18, 1925, in Huron, to Arthur and Ethel (Bailey) Ramsell.  She grew up in rural Huron and received her elementary education at Valley School #1.  Ruth graduated from Huron High School in 1943.  She earned a teaching certificate from Huron College and a Bachelor’s degree in Colorado.

Ruth taught in a rural school in Beadle County, at Iroquois, and at an Army school in Germany.  She also taught at a public school in Lander, Wyoming, where she met her future husband, Erwin Cernick.  They were married at Ruth’s parents’ home in Huron on August 26, 1954, and lived in Lander for a couple years before moving to Huron.  Ruth was the children’s librarian at the Huron Public Library for many years.  She retired in 1989. 

Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, reading, cooking and canning. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Erwin; her brother, Paul Ramsell; and her granddaughter, Savannah Cernick. 

Grateful to have shared in her life are her five children, Paul (Belinda) Cernick of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Diane (Dennis) Schill of Hannah, North Dakota, Laura Cernick of Sioux Falls, Linda (Mick) Mullet of Kansas City, Missouri and David (Beth) Cernick of Wheaton, Illinois; five grandchildren, Daniel (Danyelle) Schill, Andrew and Luke Schill, and Drew and Tanner Cernick; two sisters, Betty (Mel) Fuehrer of Huron and Janet Henderson of Mitchell; her sister-in-law, Ila (Mac) Haskell of Huron; and many nieces and nephews.
