Kuhler Funeral Home

A family is a legacy of love, a love that lasts forever.

Ruby Walter

The family of Ruby Walter announces with great sadness the passing of their beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother.  Ruby went to join the Lord in her heavenly home on May 15, 2012 at the age of 88.

Her funeral service was at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 22nd, at Bethesda Church in Huron with Rev. Roy Burket officiating.  Burial was in the Bethesda Church section of Ideal Cemetery.

Ruby Kathryn Gross was born the first of three children to Paul W. and Anna (Tschetter) Gross in Beadle County near Carpenter, South Dakota.   When she was six months old, she moved with her family to Sully County, and later moved to Hyde County where she attended a one-room rural school through the eighth grade.  In 1939, her family moved back to Beadle County, where she graduated from Huron High School in 1942.

Ruby was baptized September 1, 1946 by Rev. Paul J.R. Hofer in the Hofer Church.  On April 27, 1947, she married Menno J. Walter at Bethel Church near Yale.

In Spring 1963, Menno and Ruby moved their family to Iroquois, where they owned and operated Walter’s County Store for 34 years, retiring in 1997.  Over the many years they also owned and operated Walter’s Furniture, a Phillips 66 Station, and a laundromat and car wash.

Ruby was an active member of Bethesda Church, Women’s Missionary Society of Bethesda and the American Legion Auxiliary, which she had served as both the local chapter president and state president.

In addition to being the world’s best mother, Ruby enjoyed being a homemaker for her busy family.  She enjoyed hand painting ceramics, making jams, and cross stitching dish towels, which she made sure to share with those close to her.  She enjoyed reading Christian literature and cooking, especially the old-fashioned German dishes.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her surviving children, Rollin (Barbara) Walter of Iroquois, Marlin (Monica) Walter of Fort Collins, Colorado, Denise (Mack) Robertson of Omaha, Nebraska, Mavis Walter of Sioux Falls, and Kevin Walter of St. Paul, Minnesota.  Grandma will be missed by nine grandchildren, Ryan, Reed and Aaron Walter, Andrea (Gavin) Utesch, Keith (Jeny), Kyle and Kory Robertson, and Emily and Lauren Walter; and one great-grandchild, Skylar Robertson.  Also grateful for being a part of her life are her only sister, Josephine Hofer of Huron; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Bobbi (Henry) Tschetter, James (Lois) Walter, Amos (Lorna) Walter, and Violet  Tschetter; and several nieces and nephews.

Greeting her in heaven will be her husband of 63 years, her parents, and her only brother, Leroy Gross.
