Robert W. “Bud” Kirton

Robert Kirton obituary photoRobert W. “Bud” Kirton, age 77, of Huron, died Friday, September 26, 2008, at his home.  His funeral service was at 10:30 AM Thursday, October 2, 2008, at the Kuhler Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Prien officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council. The family prefers that memorials be directed to veteran’s organizations in South Dakota.

Robert “Bud” Kirton was born October 17, 1930 to Clarence A. and Clara (Van Hecke) Kirton in Jerauld County near Wessington Springs.  He attended rural schools and one year at Wessington Springs High School.  He discontinued high school to work on the family farm. 

On October 20, 1951, Bud married Esther Hines at Pierre.  Bud was inducted into the US Army in February 1952.  He served in Korea during the Korean War and was injured in a car accident while stateside in Washington State.  He received a discharge from the Army in February 1954 due to the resulting permanent disability. 

Bud did some seasonal work in the summer for a few years for construction companies.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, lawn work, and being outdoors.  He also loved music and had played the harmonica and guitar in two different bands. 

Bud was a member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7 and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Albert in infancy, and Eugene.

He is survived by his wife Esther, of more than 56 years; three children, Robin Kirton, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Sherri Holcombe, of Orlando, Florida, and Theodore “Ted” Kirton, of Phoenix, Arizona; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Alfred Kirton of Garretson, Betty (George DeLong) Slee-DeLong, of Huron, Deanna (William) Butler, of Lead, and Clarence “J.R.” (Libby) Kirton, of Rock Springs Wyoming; and one sister-in-law, Marie Kirton of Hemet, California.
