A family is a legacy of love, a love that lasts forever.

Rev. Edward Wiebe

Rev. Edward Wiebe, age 90, of Huron, died Friday evening, September 14, 2007 at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.  His funeral service was at 10:30 AM  Wednesday, September 19 at the Mt. Olivet Mennonite Church with Rev. David Erdman and Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating.  Burial was in the Ideal Cemetery.

Edward Wiebe was born December 26, 1916, in Whitewater, Kansas to Herman and Anna (Epp) Wiebe.  He had polio when he was a farm boy, which is why he limped.  The limp was his “trademark.”  He attended Hesston College, where he met his future wife, Velma Litwiller.  He also attended Goshen College, BIOLA University and Southwestern Baptist Seminary.

On July 20, 1946, he married Velma Litwiller on her parents’ farm at Hopedale, Illinois.  He pastored churches at Go Ye Mission in Porum, Oklahoma, at West New Hopedale Mennonite Church in Ringwood, Oklahoma, at Mt. Olivet Mennonite Church in Huron and at Bethel Community Church in Santa Fe Springs, California.  He served as the administrator at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Inman, Kansas and pastored at Durham, Kansas at the same time.  Velma and Ed retired in 1989 in Rockford, Illinois and continued pulpit supply while he was active in the Shiloh Free Church.  They moved to Huron in November 2005.

He enjoyed visiting his parents’ and brothers’ farms in Kansas.  Ed was an avid woodworker and made furniture for his children and grandchildren.  His hobbies included table games, gardening, and listening to Southern gospel music, especially Bill Gaither.  However, his heart was in the ministry.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma on June 25, 2007; his brother Alfred; and his sister Esther.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two sons, Gary (Nancy) Wiebe of Belvidere, Illinois and Daniel (Doris) Wiebe of Pueblo, Colorado; two daughters, Cheryl Hofer of Huron and Beth (Larry) Bowers of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; eleven grandchildren, Marcy Wiebe, Charity Wiebe, Darryn (Maggie) Wiebe, Kelvin (Charlene) Wiebe, Traela (Neal) Kloster, Matthew Hofer, Nathan Bowers, Haley (Steven) Soto, Gared Bowers, Danelle Wiebe and Danae Wiebe; seven great-grandchildren, Gage, Evelyn, Devon, Karis, Tanner, Madisyn and Taygen; three brothers, Richard, Waldimar, and  Bill Wiebe; and three sisters, Hilda Regier, Emilie Busenitz, and Gladys Wiebe.

Edward joined his Lord and his wife Friday, September 14, 2007, at the age of ninety years, eight months and nineteen daysWell done, thou good and faithful servant.
