Paul Ames obituary photoPaul Ames, age 79, of Huron, died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at SunQuest Healthcare Center.    His funeral service was at 11 AM Wednesday, May 26th at Riverview United Methodist Church, with Rev. Barry Whipkey officiating.  Military rites was given by the Huron Veterans Council.  Burial was in the Tulare Cemetery.

Paul Hubert Ames was born July 30, 1930 on a farm near Wolsey, South Dakota.  The eighth child of William and Clara (Gulbranson) Ames, he grew up in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1948.  Paul attended Huron College, graduating in 1958.  He was confirmed in the American Lutheran Church of Huron where he sang in the church choir for many years.  The hymns he learned so well during that time were a source of comfort to him all of his life. 

Paul served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in Alaska from 1950 to 1952, and continued in the Army Reserves after completing his tour of duty.  Following his return to Huron, he farmed with his brother John.  In addition, he cared for his mother, Clara, until her death. 

After returning home from the Army, Paul learned to fly at the W.W. Howe Airport in Huron and thrilled his young nephews Greg and Vince with exciting rides in his airplane.  He was a member of the Riverview United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Mona, John, Irene, Billy and Jane Ann.

He is survived by one sister, Dorothy Robinson of Wayzata, Minnesota; one brother, Melford Ames of Long Beach, California; his sister-in-law, Darleen Ames of Huron; his brother-in-law, Norman Blount of Clearwater, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
