Orpha D’Ette Sawyer

Orpha D’Ette Sawyer, age 90, formerly of Huron, died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at her daughter’s home in Somerville, Tennessee.  A graveside service was at 2 PM Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls with Father George Parmeter officiating.

Orpha D’Ette was born on December 11, 1919, at Kansas City, Missouri, to Carl and Ida Marie Cross.  She grew up in Missouri and graduated from high school there.  Orpha D’Ette married Jamie Hamrick and later married Leslie C. Sawyer.  He died in 1961.

Orpha D’Ette worked as a sales clerk at Habicht’s in Huron for a number of years.  After she moved to Rapid City to care for her grandchildren, she worked at Haggerty’s.  When Orpha D’Ette returned to Huron she became involved with the “Coats for Kids” project and the Red Hatters, and attended Bethesda Church.  Grandma D'Ette was affectionately called "The Frog Lady" because of her large collection of frogs.  She moved to Somerville in February 2008 to live with her daughter. 

She is survived by her children, Jamie Carl (Norma) Hamrick of Mountain View, Arkansas, Helen (Thomas) Lambeth of Somerville, Tennessee, Leslie (Hank) Swezey of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, Mark (Robbin) Sawyer stationed with NATO in The Netherlands, and Jeannie (Wayne) Hofer of Huron; fifteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and her brother, George (Marge) Cross of Sun City, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie and her brother, John Cross.
