Norma Nelson

Norma L. Nelson, age 81, of Huron, died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Sun Quest Health Care Center.  Her funeral service was 10:00 AM, Monday, August 4th, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Senner officiating.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. 

Norma Lockwood was born January 26, 1927, to  Norman and Frances (Bosley) Lockwood at Doland, South Dakota.  She attended school and graduated from Doland High School.

She attended a business college at Mankato, Minnesota for one year.  Norma worked as a secretary for the South Dakota Bankers Association for several years.

On June 25, 1950, Norma married Harland Nelson at Rapid City.  Norma and Harland with Harold Owens operated the Double H Ice Cream Store and then Harold’s Café.  In 1967, Norma and Harland opened the Barn Restaurant, which they ran successfully for thirty-eight years.  She took great pride in the being the Barn’s hostess, and could be found carrying customer’s fussy babies around while their parents ate.

Norma and Harland enjoyed dancing at the Moose Lodge and traveling together until Harland’s health limited their travels.  She was the chairperson for Coffee Day for Crippled Children. Norma enjoyed her flowers, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, baking and bowling.  She loved animals, especially the family pets.  Norma cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harland on November 30, 2007; one daughter-in-law, Joan Nelson; and one great-grandson, Gaige Nelson.

Grateful for having shared her life are her five children, James Nelson of Huron, Julie and her husband, Robert Lubke of Sioux Falls, Jane Nelson of Huron, Jeffrey Nelson of Huron and Joel and his wife, Amy Nelson of Huron; twenty-one grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joe and his wife, Sondra Lockwood of Sioux Falls, Don and his wife, Cleo Lockwood of Brookings and Tal and his wife, Faye Lockwood of Rapid City; two sisters, Marge Devine of Lake Elsinore, California and Corinne Hanson of Bloomington, Minnesota; one brother-in-law, Max Bjerke of Bradley; one sister-in-law, Wanda Nelson of Clark; and seventeen nieces and nephews.
