Mildred Lucille Irish was born December 29, 1912, to Elmer LeRoy and Lillian (Freeburg) Irish at the Irish Farmstead in Belle Plaine Township southwest of Doland in Spink County.  After the death of her father in 1919, due to the Swine Flu Epidemic, Mildred moved with her family to Huron. She attended Huron Schools, graduating from Huron High School in 1931, and she was an active participant in dance and music.  After attending Huron College for one year, she worked for the Travelers Insurance Company in their mortgage loan division.

On June 1, 1940, Mildred married George M. Starring at Huron.  They spent the rest of their lives in Huron, except for the four years George was in the United States Army during World War II. In 1943, during the war, Mildred joined her Army husband stationed in Seattle, Washington and worked as a civil service employee in the office of the Naval Supply Depot at Pier 91.  When George was sent overseas, Mildred transferred to the Manhattan Project Office of Army Intelligence in Los Angeles.  In 1946, after the war, they returned to Huron.  From 1949, she was partner with her husband in the Huron Title Company until retiring in 1984.
