Michael Walter

Michael Walter, age 95, of Huron, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  His funeral service was at 10:30 AM Saturday, May 29th at Bethesda Church with the Rev. Phil Plett officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.

Michael Walter was born September 12, 1914, to Paul J.R. and Katherina (Hofer) Walter at Freeman, South Dakota.  He moved with his family to the family homestead in Beadle County near Lake Byron.  He attended Milford Rural School.  He worked on the family farm and numerous other farms until serving in the US Navy from July 1942 until October 1945.

After his discharge, he purchased his own farm one mile south of Lake Byron.  On June 8, 1968, he married Joyce Newell at Pipestone, Minnesota.  They farmed until 1979, when they sold the farm and moved to Huron.  Mike was employed by Beadle County for many years as a road grader operator.  After his retirement, he worked for several years for the Magness Livestock Market. 

He was a member of Bethel Church and was a past commander of the American Legion.  He was also a member of the V.F.W.  Mike enjoyed gardening and was meticulous about caring for his lawn. 

In July 2004, he moved to Stoneybrook Suites where he had resided until the time of his death. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joyce; eight brothers, Paul, Joe, John, Sam, Jacob, Edwin, Melvin and Clifford; and five sisters, Dorothy “Dora” Walter, Adeline Kuper, Katie Walter, Mary Walter, and Ann Walter; and one niece.  

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.  Grateful for having shared his life is his special friend, Tom Collings and his family of Black Hawk, South Dakota.
