Melvin Hofer obituary photoMelvin “Mel” Hofer, age 77, of Huron, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  His celebration of life service was at 7 PM Saturday, March 7th at the Bethesda Church with Rev. Phil Plett officiating.  A private family committal service was held at the Riverside Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Byron Bible Camp Building Fund, PO Box 211, Huron, SD 57350.

Melvin Hofer was born July 16, 1931, to John J.K. and Sarah (Tschetter) Hofer at the family home in Pleasant View Township, Beadle County.  He received his education in Beadle County country schools.

Melvin married Marilyn Weese on April 7, 1953, at Ivanhoe, Minnesota.  Following their marriage they made their home in Huron.  He served in the U.S. Army from October 1953 until October 1955 while stationed in Ft. Lewis, Washington.  Melvin worked as a truck driver for Huron Culvert and Tank Company for 47 years.  He was a member of the Hutterthal Mennonite Church. 

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Marty Rae; his parents; three brothers, John J,. Leon, and Joe J. Hofer; and two sisters, Rose Hofer and Anna Wyld.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn, of Huron; his children, Belinda Mae (John) Hovland, of Colleyville, TX, Steven Craig (Janie) Hofer, of Midland, TX, Grayling R. (Carrie) Hofer, of San Antonio, TX, and Abigail Danean (Dennis) Bailor, of Rapid City; seven grandchildren and one stepgrandchild,  John Ross Spicher Hovland and Lindsey Nicole Hovland, of Colleyville, TX, Stephanie Weese Hofer, of Dallas, TX, Steven Craig Hofer, Jr., of Austin TX, Mason Hunter Hofer, of San Antonio, TX, Eric Donald Graham, of Columbia, SC, Belinda Jessie Bailor (Shawn) Foltz, of Brookings, and Samantha “Sam” Caitlyn Bailor, of Rapid City; three brothers, Herbert (Dee Ann) Hofer, Eldon (Alie) Hofer, and Allen (Ella Mae) Hofer; five sisters, Alma J. Hofer, Kathryn (Harry) Becker, Dorothy Wipf, Edna (Solomon) Tschetter, and Beverly (Gary) Frankenstien; and a host of nieces and nephews.
