Mayme “May” Howells

Lewis & May HowellsMayme “May” Howells, age 95, and her husband, Lewis Howells, age 79, of Huron, both died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  Their funeral service was held at 1:00 PM, Monday, April 13th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Morris Lashwood officiating.  Burial was in the Moe Heights Cemetery near Alexandria, Minnesota at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 14th.  Memorials may be directed to the Beadle County Humane Society or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Huron. 

Mayme F. Howells was born September 5, 1913, in Moe Township, Minnesota to Hjalmar and Maria (Haabala) Olson.  She grew up in the Alexandria, Minnesota area and graduated from high school there. 

Mayme married Toivo Ranta at her parents’ home in December 1936.  He died in Huron in 1957. 

With two children to raise, May started a daycare, May’s Gaytime Nursery School, in Huron.  She met Lewis, her second husband, when he enrolled his three children in daycare.  May and Lewis Howells were married October 9, 1965, in Alexandria, Minnesota.

After ending the daycare business, May became interested in the hobby of ceramics and later started a ceramics shop in her home.  She was a master gardener and member of the Huron Garden Club, winning many prizes for her flower-filled yard.  An Eastern Star member for 62 years, May was quite happy when she received an award honoring her membership.  May’s church was a huge part of her life in later years. 

May was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings; her first husband, Toivo Ranta; her son, John Ranta; and her step-daughter, Patricia Howells.  She was closely followed in death by her husband, Lewis Howells.

She is survived by her son, Fred (Barb) Ranta, of Golden, Colorado; her stepsons Lewis Howells, of Renton, WA, and David (Barbara) Howells, of Crown Point, IN; her daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Ranta; three grandchildren, Cindy (Randy) Hass, Roy (Diane) Ranta and Jennifer Howells; four great-grandchildren; and five nieces.
