Maurine Wheeler

Maurine Wheeler, age 94, of Huron, died Friday, September 24, 2010, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.  Her memorial service was at 2 PM Tuesday, September 28th at Grace Episcopal Church with the Very Reverend Dr. Robert T. Wagner officiating.  Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to Grace Episcopal Church, P.E.O. Chapter F, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Maurine M. Sebring was born May 4, 1916, in Rockham, South Dakota to Fred and Esther (Stapp) Sebring.  She was graduated from Redfield High School in 1933, attended Huron College from 1934 to 1936, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota in 1938.  She took graduate work in English at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1941, University of Western Illinois (abroad) in 1968, and continued with extra courses at Northern State and USD graduate schools.

She married H. Kirke Wheeler on November 8, 1942, in La Jolla, California.  During the war years they lived in Texas, Missouri and New Jersey.  Following World War II they moved to Huron. 

During her career, she was a high school teacher in Wagner, South Dakota, 1938-1939; in Sebring, Ohio, a town named for her ancestors, 1939-1942; and in Huron High School, 1958-1978.  In 1976 she was one of three teachers honored by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for outstanding service to the state in education.  In 1978 the Huron High School students dedicated their yearbook to her.

She had been a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Huron since 1946, and was a past president of Episcopal Women, and past president of St. Monnica’s Guild.  She was a past member of Kappa Alpha Theta, a national women’s sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary teachers’ organization, and a past member of NEA, HEA, and SDEA.  Maurine was a member of  P.E.O. Chapter F.

She is survived by her husband, Kirke of Huron; four sons, Richard (Pamela) of Minneapolis, Ronald (Marie) of Huron, Brian  (Jeanne) of Sioux Falls, and Dr. Kirke  (Dorothy) of Sioux Falls; her daughter-in-law, June Wheeler of Huron; nine grandsons; four granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Col. S.R. Sebring, of Fairhope, Alabama; and one sister, Betty (David) Beaudoin, of Fairhope, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, Rosalie, and her son, Dr. Jeffrey Wheeler.
