Martha Walter

Martha Walter, age 92, of Huron, died Monday, August 29, 2011, at Stoneybrook Suites.  Her funeral service was at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 3rd at the Bethesda Church with Rev. Roy Burket officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. 

Martha Hofer was born June 8, 1919, to Paul and Sarah (Hofer) Hofer, south of Doland.  She graduated from Doland High School in 1937.  Martha attended Huron College earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, and continued her education to earn a Master’s degree in German in 1965.  She obtained most of her college on installment while teaching.  She taught twenty years in rural schools, twelve years in elementary, and two years at James Valley Christian School for a total of thirty-four years.

Church and Christian values had always been important to Martha.  She was a member of the Bethesda Church.  Martha married Eugene Walter in 1941, they joined the Ebenzer Church in Doland.  In 1958, Martha and Gene bought her parent’s farm. They both loved farming and found it very rewarding.  They retired from farming in 1982.  As gardening was one of her interests, they raised and sold vegetables which they continued to do even after moving to Huron in 1992.  Martha also grew many flowers and arranged them for church and different occasions.  Her talents were recognized when she won the “Looking Good” award at the South Dakota State Fair in 1996.  They joined the Bethesda Church after they moved to Huron.

Martha was a member of the SDEA, NEA, Huron Senior Center, Christian Women, and the National Garden Club.  She attended church every Sunday, WMS, Sunday school, and made phone calls for the food committee.  Martha also enjoyed bingo and dominoes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene in 1995; and three brothers, Edgar, R.J., and John Hofer.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her nieces and nephews and their families, Janice (Lewis) Grimm Toland, Gloria (Gary) Stahl, Douglas Hofer, Blanche Walter, Emery (Leola) Gross, Dolores (Rueben) Tschetter, Morris (Gloria) Gross, Dennis (Judy) Pullman, Sandra Smith, Sharon (Don) Winseth, Eileen (Larry) Deelstra, Lynn (Alice) Walter, Ronald Walter, Darwin Walter, Janice Long, Jeanie (Lee) Williams, and Linnie Gross.
