Louis Tompkins

Louis Tompkins, age 88, of Huron, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007. His memorial service was 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 4th, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kevin Channell and Rev. William Pfautz, officiating. Entombment was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery Mausoleum with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.

Louis Delmer Tompkins was born on September 23, 1918 to Vernon and Ina (Simmons) Tompkins at Highmore. Lou graduated from Highmore High School and attended college for one year. He married Lucille Bowder in 1941 at Huron. Lou entered the United States Navy October 20, 1942 at Sioux Falls. He served as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate and was honorably discharged November 4, 1945 at Memphis, Tennessee. Lou owned and operated the OK Tire Store for many years. Lucille died in 1974. He married Lola Komitor. They divorced later. On April 15, 1995, Lou married Anna Wetrich at Huron.

Lou attended the First Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the Huron Sertoma. He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and playing pool, and was an avid reader.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leland; and one stepson, Charles Wetrich.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Anna of Huron; stepchildren, Carol Komitor of Denver, Colorado, Don (Sarah) Wetrich of Sioux Falls, Lois (Dennis) Heinzen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Rick (Amely) Jackson of Dallas, Texas; stepdaughter-in-law, Millicent Wetrich of Dayton, Ohio; fourteen grandchildren, Susan Quinn, Deborah Snider, Michael Wetrich, Monica Healy, Janet Hayes, Jeanne Coviello, Jim Wetrich, Gary Wetrich, Eric Wetrich, Tom Heinzen, Kathy Cummings, Beverly Jackson, Amy Komitor and Patrick Komitor; fifteen great-grandchildren, Patrick Quinn, Lindsey Nichols, Ross Wetrich, Grace Wetrich, Sarah Healy, Anna Healy, Elizabeth Healy, Kimberly Hayes, Angela Coviello, Sarah Wetrich, Carly Wetrich, Lauren Wetrich, Ryan Heinzen, Cora Heinzen and Kai Jackson; and two great great-grandchildren, Patrick Wayne Quinn and Nathan Quinn.
