Leroy Person

Leroy Person, of Huron, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at his home.  His funeral service was at 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Rick Senner officiating.  Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery.   

 Leroy Dean Person was born June 3, 1942, at Madison, South Dakota to Leonard L. and Ava (Jones) Person.  Leroy graduated from Carthage High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Dakota State College in Madison.  On September 18, 1965, he married Donna Swanson at Carthage, South Dakota.  Following their marriage they lived in Colman, where he taught for three years.  

Leroy taught for two years at Ruthton, Minnesota before moving to Huron to begin a twenty year career as a high school teacher and coach.  From 1969 through 1989, he taught 10th grade biology, and coached football as well as basketball.  He was an  assistant coach in 1973 when Huron won the boys basketball state tournament.   Leroy refereed football and basketball for more than twenty years as well. 

After retirement from teaching in 1989, Leroy began a career in insurance sales with Farmers Union Insurance, founding the Leroy Person Insurance Agency.  During his nineteen years with Farmers Union Insurance he created one of the largest and most profitable agencies in South Dakota.  He was able to do this through his incredible work ethic, his focus on building strong client relationships, his studious approach to insurance products and his dedication to understanding the wants and needs of potential clients.   He retired from the insurance business on January 1, 2008. 

Leroy was a member of the Huron Area Education Association, the National Education Association, the South Dakota Coaches Association, and was past president of the Huron Area Education Credit Union.  He also served several years as president of the South Dakota Farmers Union Insurance Agents Association.  An active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Leroy was a former director of the church properties and church treasurer.  Some of his hobbies and interests included fishing on the Missouri River, hunting, snow skiing, and farming.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Donna, of Huron; three sons, Todd (Becky) Person of El Paso, Texas, and their two children, Karl and Renee; Troy of Huron; and Travis of Indianapolis, Indiana.  Leroy is also survived by two brothers, Robert (Diane) Person of Dry Ridge, Kentucky, and Gerritt (Linda) Person of Charleston, South Carolina, and one sister, Melicent (Tim) Miller of Lake Mills, Wisconsin. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.
