Karen Timperley

Karen Timperley, age 65, of Huron, died Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls after a valiant battle with cancer.  Her funeral service was at 10 AM Friday, November 30th at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating.  Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the Beadle County Relay for Life.

Karen K. Van Scharrel was born January 31, 1942, near Howard to Sievert and Cora (Lusk) Van Scharrel.  She grew up in rural Miner County near Howard and attended rural school.  Karen graduated from Howard High School and attended Northwest College of Commerce where she earned a business degree. 

On March 30, 1962, she married Ronald Timperley in Huron.  They lived in Huron, where Karen worked in various secretarial positions.  Before her retirement, she had been employed for ten years by the Federal Aviation Administration. 

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Beta Sigma Phi Laureate Eta Sorority and enjoyed crocheting and reading.  Karen, along with Don Collins of Huron, was instrumental in the establishment of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Huron.  She was actively involved in Beadle County Relay for Life since its inception including this past year’s celebration. 

Karen was an inspiration to many in her courageous struggle with cancer.  She remained positive and was an encouragement to others.  She will be missed by all her family and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents. 

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Ron of Huron; her two sons, Scott (Linda) of Le Mars, Iowa and Todd (Stacey) of North Sioux City; four grandchildren, Derek, Trevor, Alissa and Emily; two brothers, Elwood (Ruby) Van Scharrel and Boyd (Marjean) Van Scharrel, all of Howard; six nieces; and one nephew.
