John P. Meyer

John P. Meyer, age 76, of Huron died Sunday evening, June 19, 2011, at the Huron Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with acute leukemia.  His funeral mass was celebrated at 11 AM Wednesday, June 22nd at Holy Trinity Catholic Church by Father Terry Anderson.  Military rites were conducted by the Huron Veterans Council.    Burial was in the St. Martin Catholic Cemetery. 

John P. Meyer was born in Huron, South Dakota on September 17, 1934, to Jack and Cecelia (Stackwick) Meyer.  He attended St. Martin Grade School and graduated from Huron High School as homecoming king.  He attended Huron College for two years.  John enjoyed all sports and received many honors in basketball, football, track and baseball.  He was a left-handed pitcher for the Huron Indians and the Stahl Flyers baseball teams for many years.     From October 1954 to August 1956 John served in the US Army and was stationed in France. 

On September 30, 1957, he married Mary Kathleen Costello at St. Martin Catholic Church in Huron.  Following their marriage they made their home in Huron.  John was very proud of his family and enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Lake Byron.

John worked for Northwestern Public Service as a gas serviceman until October 1984 when he retired due to a spinal cord injury.  John enjoyed swimming at the Nordby Center.  He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the American Legion William Reaves Post #7.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, June and Carletta Meyer, Celia Smith, Joan Peterson and Jackie Hein; and three brothers-in-law, Lowell Smith, Julian Peterson and Sheldon Hein.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife,  Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Meyer of Huron; three children, Lauri and her husband Carl Maas of Huron, Christine Meyer and her special friend Todd Druin of Sioux Falls, and John and his wife Lisa Meyer of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren, Philip and Heather Maas of Worthing, Casey Maas of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Ryan and Jillian Maas of Sioux Falls, Molly Maas of Sioux Falls, and Lauren Meyer of Sioux Falls; one great-grandson, Jackson John Maas of Worthing; one sister, Sally Hofer of Cold Spring, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
