John Kuhns obituary photoJohn “Johnny” Ray Kuhns, age 57, of Huron, died Friday, May 15, 2009, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  His funeral service was at 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 20th at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Crippen officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, the First United Methodist Church Coffee Maker Fund, or Huron Regional Medical Center Foundation.

John was born January 31, 1952, to Darold and Helen (Pearson) Kuhns at Hoven, South Dakota.  He attended school in Onida and Gettysburg, South Dakota.

On October 15, 1971, John married Karen Schilling at Akaska, South Dakota.

John managed the Northstar Gas Station in Gettysburg from November 1971 to September 1972.  In October 1972, they moved to Sterling, Illinois, where John worked for a masonry factory.  They moved to Huron, South Dakota in August 1975.  John worked for Terex Manufacturing, formerly Telelect, Inc., from February 1977 until the time of his death.

John loved riding his motorcycle for hours.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  John’s hobbies included wood working and being meticulous about his yard.  He was an avid Huron Tiger, Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins fan.

He was preceded in death by his father, Darold Kuhns; his father-in-law, Calvin Schilling; and one brother-in-law, Myron Schilling.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife of 37 years, Karen of Huron; one daughter, Chastity Kuhns Alsenbel and her husband, Moayad Alsenbel of Aljish, Saudi Arabia; one son, Justin Kuhns of Brookings; six grandchildren, Amira, Abudy, Yasmine, Hassan, Daniel and Adam Alsenbel; his mother, Helen Kuhns of Huron; two sisters, Darla LaPorte of Seattle, Washington and Diana Smith of Sterling, Illinois; his mother-in-law, Dora Schilling of Selby; four brothers-in-law, Rodney Schilling of Sioux Falls, Jay and Vicki Schilling of Rapid City, Scott Schilling and his special friend, Deb Berens of Selby, and Chuck and Vicky Schilling of Mound City; four sisters-in-law, Vickie and Harley Gates of Aberdeen, Pamela Rhodes and her special friend, Jeff Gronau of Whitewater, Kansas, Jolene and Brad Lappe of Rapid City, and Pam Schilling of Rapid City; and twenty nieces and nephews.
