John J. Helgerson

John J. Helgerson, age 94, of Edina, Minnesota, and formerly of Huron, died December 7, 2011, at N.C. Little Hospice at Edina.  A family service was at 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 10th at the Normandale Lutheran Church at Edina.  A committal service was held at 10:00 AM, Monday, December 12th at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Huron.  Military rites were conducted by the Huron Veterans Council. 

John J. Helgerson was born September 4, 1917, at Mt. Vernon, South Dakota, the son of Leonard C. and Josephine (Kalstad) Helgerson.  He grew up in Mt. Vernon and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School.  He attended Augustana College and graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

On September 14, 1940, John was united in marriage to Dorothy Bloom at Omaha, Nebraska.  The couple lived in Pierre following their marriage where they both worked for the State Motor Vehicle Department.  John served in the United States Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946.  Following military service, he completed his education at South Dakota State University. 

John worked for a year at Scott Engineering Company in Watertown, and then at Hungry Horse, Montana and Huron, South Dakota for the United States Bureau of Reclamation and the Department of Energy.  He retired in 1979. 

John was a member of the American Lutheran Church, the Huron Rotary Club, and the Sons of Norway.  He enjoyed volunteering at Washington Elementary School, where he helped first and second grade students with reading. 

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three children, John L. (Martha) Helgerson of Reston, Virginia, Stuart (Wendy) Helgerson of Carson City, Nevada, and Mary D. (Lea) Lippert of Edina, Minnesota; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
