Joe P. Hofer

Joe P Hofer obituary photoJoe P. Hofer, age 87, husband of Donna Hofer, of Huron, died Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.  His funeral service was at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 31st at the Mt. Olivet Church with Rev. David Erdman officiating.  Burial was in the Prairie Bible Church Cemetery, rural Carpenter, with Rev. Rod Poppinga officiating.

Joseph P. Hofer was born on September 20, 1924, to Paul J.R. and Anna (Tschetter) Hofer in rural Bridgewater, South Dakota.   When Joe was about 2 years old the family moved to a farm near Hitchcock.

Joe attended Mortimer School through the 8th grade.  Following his education he helped Iky and Anne (Joe’s sister) Tschetter on the farm for several years.  After this time Joe farmed with his parents for a number of years and worked at Armour’s during the winter months.

Joe was baptized by his father, Rev. Paul JR Hofer and Rev. Joseph J. Hofer on June 22, 1941 at Hutterthal Mennonite Church, Carpenter.

Joe married Donna Gross on January 28, 1954, at Emmanuel Mennonite Church.   They established their home on a farm near Carpenter where they lived until retiring in 1995.  Joe took great pride in the crops he and Donna raised and especially enjoyed working with their livestock; cattle, pigs, sheep, dairy cows and poultry.

After retiring Joe transferred his passion for growing things to gardening.  For a number of years he rented several plots at the Community Gardens in Huron.  Early in Joe’s gardening career the Farmer’s Market was started and he was one of the charter vendors.  He spent many hours picking and preparing produce for his customers. Joe especially loved sweet corn season.  He and several of his grandkids would pick the corn and sell it from Grandpa’s driveway.  If the customers didn’t come to them their business went mobile.

Joe’s generous spirit was exhibited as he would share his garden produce with family, friends, neighbors and sometimes anyone who he came upon when he still had inventory.

For the last several years Joe almost always started his day with a trip to the Nordby Center for his daily workout and visit with his friends.

The Lord blessed Joe and Donna with five beautiful daughters in who Joe took great pride.

Joe is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna; five daughters, Gerri (Gene) Leach of Sabin, Minnesota, LeAnn (Jody) Kuper of Milbank, Carlo (Doug) Person of Seattle, Washington, Georgia (Steve) Langbehn  and  Dawn (Brent) Kleinsasser, all of Huron; twelve grandchildren, Brett (Mindi) Kuper, Mitch and Grant Kuper, Evangeline, Abbie and Donnie Person, Tanner, Jessie and Becca Langbehn, Mason, Kali and Morgan Kleinsasser; one sister, Anna Tschetter of Huron; and two brothers, Edwin (Josephine) Hofer of Brookings and Eldon (Bertha) Hofer of Huron.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Joel; two brothers, John S. Hofer and Paul K. Hofer; two sisters, Catherine Walter and Marie Wipf; three sisters-in-law, Roslyn Hofer, Anna Hofer and Katie Hofer; and two brothers-in-law, Eldon Walter and David  Wipf.
