Joe P. Hofer obituary photoJoe P. Hofer, age 87, of Huron, died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at his home.  His funeral service was at 10:30 AM Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, rural Doland, with the Rev. Gordon Wiebe and the Rev. David Erdman officiating.  Burial was in the Emmanuel Church Cemetery.

Joe P. Hofer was born May 6, 1924, on a farm thirteen miles southeast of Doland, to Peter A. and Anna (Tschetter) Hofer.  After graduating from high school he continued to farm on his farm six miles southeast of Doland.  On October 9, 1949, he was united in marriage to Delcie Wipf at Doland.  In 1943 he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized and became a member of Emmanuel Mennonite Church.

On December 4, 1968, their daughter Holly Sue was born.  She was a Down Syndrome child with a heart problem.  On December 7, 1970, she went to be with Jesus.

Joe became a board member of the Open Door Mission in 1957 and served for 25 years.  His heart was definitely in missions and they both reached out to so many in the area with Christian love.  Joe served at Emmanuel Church and the community and also as Richfield Township supervisor for many years.

Farming was his vocation and his hobby.  Joe and Delcie sold part of the farm in 1997 and moved to Huron in 1998.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Holly Sue; his brother Harris Hofer; and a nephew, Roger Paul Hofer.

He is survived by his wife Delcie, of Huron; his brothers and sister, Paul (Ruth) Hofer, Elgin (Esther) Hofer, and Gladys Hofer, all of Huron, and DeWayne (Karen) Hofer of Tea; his sister-in-law, Edna Hofer of Huron; and many nieces and nephews.
