Jessie Chaffee obituary photoJessie M. Chaffee, age 89, of Huron, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at SunQuest Health Care Center.  Her funeral service was at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 21st at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Crippen officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to HRMC Hospice.

Jessie Margaret Terry was born to Guy and Eva Terry October 12, 1919, in Balaton, Minnesota.  She graduated from high school in Astoria, South Dakota, in 1937.  She worked her way through South Dakota State College as a waitress in a local Brookings restaurant.  She graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics.  She taught science and home economics in the Russell, Minnesota school district.  On April 4, 1942, she married George H. Chaffee.  During the World War II years Jessie followed George on several military moves across the country.  They moved to Huron, South Dakota in 1949, from Manhattan, Kansas where George had graduated from Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine.

Jessie’s number one profession and focus was her family.  She was an amazing full time mother to four children and a community volunteer.  Some of her many church and community involvements were United Methodist Women, Girl Scouts, YWCA Board, Hospital Pink Ladies, Beadle County Republican committees, and PTA.  She had many social pleasures and hobbies, among them were Belles and Beaus square dancing, playing many games of bridge and whist, ceramics, knitting and crocheting.  All of her family members have many homemade afghans and dishrags as keepsakes.  George and Jessie have been extremely active members of the First United Methodist Church in Huron for close to 60 years, serving on committees, teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and many a church kitchen duty.

Grateful to have shared her wonderful life are her husband, George H. Chaffee; son, Daniel (Lisa) J. Chaffee; and daughters, Bonnie (Ron) Price and Nancy (Pete) Holzgang.  She is also survived by nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Baumbach.

Jessie is now with those who preceded her to heaven free from pain and in awe of our Lord.  Those waiting for her arrival were a son, Terry H. Chaffee; twin grandchildren; one sister, Ardis; and her parents.
