Helen Schneller

Helen Schneller, age 90, of Huron, died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the SunQuest Health Care Center.  Her funeral service was at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 12th, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Crippen officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Helen Wolf was born November 28, 1920, to Byron and Olga (Ness) Wolf at Watertown, South Dakota.  Helen grew up in Sisseton, and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1938.  She worked as a bookkeeper in Clark, South Dakota, Los Angeles, and Chicago before moving back to South Dakota.  On August 7, 1954, Helen married Lowell L. Schneller at Sisseton.

She dedicated many years of her career to Osborn’s Clothing Company and the United Way in Huron, South Dakota.  Before WWII started, she completed pilot lessons, at 75 she went up in a hot air balloon and at 87 finally rode in a helicopter.

Helen was known for her wit, her sense of adventure, and her generosity to friends, family, and strangers.  She enjoyed traveling, playing cards and games, reading, crosswords, and collecting stamps.   In her youth and again at age 80 she took up painting.  Her grasp of the English language helped her enjoy word games and create ditties for cards and poetry.   She was very involved in her church, politics, and her community.  Helen was generous with her time, talents, and her life and she will be missed by many people.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marnie and Lee Bastian of Missoula, Montana.  She is also survived by a cousin, Bea and Wendy Gelina; by many nephews and nieces and their families, Kaycee (Dewar) and Buck Breazile, Byron and Wendy Wolf, Brenda Wolf,  Suzanne (Schneller) and Charlie Stockland,  Linda (Schneller) and Dan Burdette, Rodney and Lori Schneller, and Jackie, Janie, Corkie, Jim, Russell, and Patty Burnham; and many special friends, Gerry Kaufman, Betty Dornbush, Thelma Goodall, Gladie Haggar, Betty Bergstrom; Louise Diehl.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell; her sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Bill Dewar; her brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Joyce Wolf; her husband’s brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Kay Schneller; and sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Roy Burnham.

Her family would like to thank the friends who shared so much of their lives and dedicated so much of their time to her.  We would also like to thank the SunQuest Health Care Center staff for their love and caring attention to her needs during her time there.
