Helen  Kunze obituary photoHelen Kunze, age 86, of Huron, died Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Salida, Colorado.  Her funeral service was at 10:30 AM Wednesday, May 11th at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Crippen officiating.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.   Memorials may be directed to Angel of Shavano Hospice, 8044 West Hwy. 50, Suite 202, Salida, CO 81201.

Helen Lorraine (Hansen) McCrary Kunze was born on August 12, 1924, at Ethan, South Dakota, to Herman and Hilda (Carlson) Hansen.  She grew up on the family farm and received her education at the rural schools of Hanson County and graduated from Ethan High School.

On June 20, 1942, she was married to Ellsworth B. McCrary (Mac) at the Methodist Church in Mitchell, South Dakota.  In addition to helping on the family farm she was a homemaker and raised six children.  She also worked as a Teacher’s Aide, assisted at Mac’s in Ethan, South Dakota and as a Sunday School Teacher at the United Methodist Church in Ethan.  The family moved to Huron, South Dakota in 1971 and purchased Mac’s Laundromat located at 371 Wisconsin Avenue.  On August 2, 1976, Ellsworth died.

On October 1, 1981 she married Lawrence D.”Larry” Kunze.  She was an active lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, served in Women’s Circle and the Prayer and Share Group.  She and Larry worked in Missions and the Heifer International Project for over 10 years.  Larry Kunze passed away on December 17, 1991.

Helen enjoyed life to the fullest.  She was adventuresome and was always up to the challenge of a new adventure.  Helen enjoyed playing cards and dominos, walking, shopping and spending time with her family.  She was always up for a new challenge, and spent the last several years caring for her elderly family, neighbors and church members.

Helen suffered a severe stroke on August 3, 2010 and was hospitalized at the HRMC and later was a resident at SunQuest Healthcare.  She received excellent care and rehabilitation services, but despite her best efforts, Helen was unable to recover.  She spent 2011 in the loving care of daughter Chris Cowherd and family in Salida, Colorado.  After her stroke, she was a source of inspiration, perseverance, dedication and strength for all those around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; three brothers; and one sister.

Grateful to have shared her life are six children, Sharon (Bob) Stangler, Medina, Minnesota, Dennis (Therese) McCrary, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Charleen (Mike) McBrayer, Roswell, Georgia, Dean (Deborah) McCrary, Richardson, Texas, Chris (George) Cowherd, Salida, Colorado, and Troy (Jill) McCrary, Alpharetta, Georgia; one step-son Scott (Janet) Kunze, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 24 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Wipf, Salem, South Dakota, Maxine Nickel, Mitchell, South Dakota; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
