Genevieve Hofer obit photoGenevieve M. Hofer, age 87, of Huron, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at the Sunquest Health Care Center.  Her funeral service was at 2 PM Monday, November 3rd at the Mt. Olivet Church with Rev. David Erdman officiating.  Burial was in the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.  

Genevieve Mae Hofer was born on March 7, 1921, to Paul P. and Edna Mae (Hosterman) Hofer, on the family farm thirteen miles south of Doland.  She grew up on the family farm and attended country grade school and graduated from high school at Doland in 1938.  She also attended Grace Bible Institute at Omaha and graduated from Northwest College of Commerce.

She was married to Clifford T. Hofer on August 12, 1945, at Mt. Olivet Mennonite Church by Rev. Jacob A. Friesen.  They were the first couple married in the old Mt. Olivet Mennonite Church in Huron where they were charter members.  C.T. and Gen owned and operated The Christian Book and Gift Store in Huron.  Genevieve worked for Ralph and Reed Hutchinson as a legal secretary and also worked for the South Dakota Farmers Union and the Federal Bureau of Reclamation Power Division, retiring in 1983.

Activities that Genevieve was involved in and enjoyed included the Mt. Olivet Church, where she sang in the church choir and a ladies trio, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Missionary Fellowship.  She was also active in the Gideons International Women’s Auxiliary, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Huron Senior Center and Domestic Engineers.  Genevieve enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends.  She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, always willing to help anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford on March 29, 1995; her grandson, Chad Morrison; and a sister, Lorine Wollman.

Survivors include her children, Maynard (Stephanie) Hofer of Tomah, Wisconsin, Sharon (Mark) Heuston of Huron, Barb (Bruce) Morrison of Huron, Timothy J. Hofer of Spearfish, and Jonathan D. Hofer of Pasadena, California; eight grandchildren, Nikki Morrison of Huron, Tara (Tony) Brown of Lincoln, Nebraska, Adam (Amber) Morrison  of Huron, Jessie (Mike) Winter of Sioux Falls, Meghan Hofer of La Crosse, Wisconsin,  Benjamin Hofer of Jacksonville, Florida, Jacob Heuston of Huron and Rachel Heuston of  Minneapolis, Minnesota; nine great-grandchildren, Morgan, Lucas, Spencer, and Addysen Morrison, Vaughn Morrison Brown, Peyton Morrison, Rylea Williams, Lilliana Morrison and Sheridyn Winter; two sisters, Wanda (Glenn) Wipf of Watertown and Ruth Decker of Reedley, California; one sister-in-law, Elma Dillman of Wausau, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.
